4th July 2024
West Cheshire Shield - Final
The two teams based on Heath Road contested the West Cheshire Shield Final last night at St. Werburgh's Club, and it was Upton B who prevailed over Upton A.

Upton A batted first and struggled to keep up with the vastly more experienced B team who played more consistently throughout. Indeed, by full time seven of the B players had scored over 60, compared to only two from the A side. At half time the scores were 211-278, and at full time 378-512.  Congratulations to Upton B who collect their second cup of the season.  Also, congrats to the newly formed Upton A team who did very well in getting to the final. The only way is up!

Northgate Cup - Final
The first of this season's finals was played tonight at the Cross Foxes, with Upton B taking on St. Werburgh's Club.

Upton B batted first, and some consistent play from both sides saw the two teams separated by just 25 points at the break, with Upton holding the advantage,  HT scores 277-252.  Indeed, Upton B did not have an individual stick under 32 throughout the first half, which is excellent.

That first half lead proved to be decisive.  The second half was much closer, with Upton B adding just 2 to their overall lead to win the game by 27 points, and the Northgate Cup FT scores 514-487.  Congratulations to Upton B, indeed to both teams, because all night there were only two individual sticks under 20 (one for each side).

Derek Jones - 5 ball shot
In last night's 5-a-side match, Bawn Lodge v St. Werburgh's, Derek Jones of St. Werburgh's played an incredible last ball his second stick.  After seven balls, Derek had nothing down, and the black was in between the 8 and 9 cups and almost completely surrounded by other balls.  Derek did very well just to hit the black, and in doing so, sent all the balls round the black in seemingly every direction, and FIVE of them ended up in cups.  Never seen anything like it before, quite incredible to witness!  A Derek Jones has now been added to the Terminology page, just in case it happens again one day!

Bagatelle Table with side pockets For Sale

I have been contacted by someone who has a bagatelle table for sale.  The table has been in the family since the 1930's, having been purchased from a local pub, but has been in storage for a number of years and is no longer required.  The table is 10ft by 3ft 8ins approx and has side pockets.  It requires some TLC but could be restored into a very nice table indeed.   An interesting feature is that it has octagonal legs, surely a sign of a quality build.

If anyone out there is interested, please let me know, and I will pass your details on to the seller.

Chair: Ed Wicks
In attendance: Ed Wicks, Mark Jones, Martin White, Neil Davies, John Pritchard, Rob Bawn, Shaun Murphy, Ted Randles, Paul Williams, Suzanne Johnson, Rich Evans, Patrick Wallace, Jake McNicholas, Nigel Walker
Apologies: None
Agenda:
1.
Open Competition sponsored by Bawn.
2. Complaint made by Upton B re league match against Greyhound 10th January 24.

Ed Wicks open the meeting just after 8pm.
1. A discussion was had with regards to a new ‘open’ competition sponsored by Bawn Lodge. Rob Bawn explained his thoughts for the competition. It would be run as a team knockout format. Best of 5 sticks (1 point per stick) top 2 from each team going forward. With 10 teams in the league this will give 20 players.

As this will be an open competition 12 places will available to players not connected to current teams.  Overall scores should be kept as any places not filled will be allocated to highest scoring sticks.  32 players will then play over two evening at Bawn Lodge with the remaining 16 on a finals evening again at Bawn Lodge.
Prize money for this event will be:
Winner: £300,  Runner Up: 100,  2 losing semi finalists: £50 each

The competition will be organised and run by Bawn Lodge and advertised throughout league venues and website.

2. A discussion was had with regards to a complaint made by Upton B against The Greyhound with regards to the misuse of rule 37 in the league rules.

It was acknowledged by all that there had been no rules broken so no further action needed to be taken. It was also noted that as rule 37 could be open to individual interpretation the rule would be amended to hopefully alleviate matters. Any amendments will be proposed for the 2024 AGM.

There being no further business Ed closed the meeting.

West Cheshire Shield Preliminary Round

With six committee members present, plus other witnesses, the draw for the Preliminary Round of the West Cheshire Shield was held at Bawn Lodge after the match last night.  Teams and venues were drawn as...

Bawn Lodge v Bridgewater at the Union Vaults
Egerton v Union Vaults at the Bridgewater

Games to be played on Wednesday, 15th November 2023.  All other entrants have received a bye into Round One.

Bagatelle Table News
The Waggon and Horses table, which has been in storage for many years, has been sold to the Chapel House pub in Burtonwood, Warrington.  The pub is run by Katie Johns who had the Spital Vaults and loves the game, so she's very pleased to have acquired the table.

This opens up the possibility of a Warrington v Chester game sometime in the future (?).  Would be a first if it comes off.   Could be individual teams, or a combined all-pubs Chester team!  Who is picking that, and who would you put in it? ☺

It's not the first time inter-city games have been contemplated.   I remember years ago a game was arranged between the Egerton Arms in Brook Street (who I played for at the time) and a team from Widnes.  A buffet was laid on, but the Widnes team didn't show up.  We were all very disappointed.

Another game which never materialised was Chester v Coventry, but sadly the Coventry league died before this happened.  The plan was for two matches, one there using Coventry Rules, and one here with our rules.  Some people from Coventry actually came up to Chester to watch a Cup Final being held in St. Werburgh's Club.

Normally no practice is allowed before a final, but we moved all the participants away from the table so we could demonstrate our rules before the final.  The people from Coventry were amazed at how simple our rules were compared to theirs.  It's possibly why the game has survived here and not other parts of the country.  We are all very privileged to play in the last Bagatelle League in the world!

The Len Cooper Plate was contested at St. Werburgh's Club this evening.  Four teams were eligible to enter, but only three turned up, and after a draw the batting order was decided as Bridgewater, Upton A and Greyhound Saughall.  The teams played in the order drawn, all first men, followed by the second men and so on, and the actual scores can be seen below.  The Greyhound came first scoring 239, followed by the Bridgewater 194 and Upton A 171 and the beer was dished out to the three teams accordingly.

There was also an additional prize for the highest individual score of the night, and this was won by the Bridgewater's Steffan Griesenbruch with an excellent score of 72.  Steffan received his prize from League Chairman Eddie Wicks and is now regarded as Germany's Number One player worldwide!

Congratulations to the Greyhound Saughall who become the second winners of the Len Cooper Plate following the Talbot back in 2019, but all three teams won really as they each collected cases of beer!

As well as the teams, thank you to everyone else who attended, it made it a great evening.

West Cheshire Shield Final
St. Werburgh’s vs Egerton Arms – venue: Upton BL
On paper this final was always going to be a close one and it didn’t disappoint!
It was a neutral venue but a very familiar table to a lot of the Edge players which was evident from the second half play.
With an outstanding opening stick of 91 Nigel Walker set Werbs off to a great start and by the end of the first half saw them with a healthy 42 point lead but this was to be no runaway.
This was most definitely a game of 2 halves with the Edge nibbling away at the lead over the next 3 sticks.
With only 24 points the difference going into the last man it was seasoned pro John Kenyon who was to step up and make a brilliant 73, chasing 98 to win Paul McAleer made a valiant attempt with a score of 86 however it wasn’t quite enough and Werbs won with a final score of 573 to 562.
Top scorers on the night:
St. Weburghs: N Walker 91, M Peacock/S Murphy 78, J Kenyon 73
Egerton Arms: P McAleer 86, P. Wallace 77, J Fellows 76
A great final played by both teams.
