Open  Knockout  Competition 2012

The Grand Final of the 2012 Open Knockout competition was played this evening at Ye Olde Cottage in Brook Street, and the eight finalists were Monty Biddle, Paul McLaughlin, Chris Parry, John Roberts, Nigel Walker, Adam Wallace, Billy Williams and Dale Williams.

After the first round the four highest scorers were Adam Wallace 75 (38+37), Paul McLaughlin 70 (38+32), John Roberts 68 (38+30) and Nigel Walker 64 (27+37).

In the semi-finals, John was drawn against Nigel and Adam was drawn against Paul.    In semi-final 1, Nigel won the toss and chose to go second.   John played well both sticks, scoring 43 and 35 for a total of 78, and could have had a few more, having no less than three balls pop out of the 6 cup.   In reply, Nigel missed the break then got into all sorts of trouble with the black, and probably the least said the better as he scored a green field.

In the second semi-final, Adam won the toss, chose to play first, and played well both sticks, scoring 37 and 32 for a total of 69.     In reply, Paul struggled at the start of his first stick and had not scored after 4 balls, but scored off each of his last 4 balls, getting 9, 14 and 6, 8 and a 3 to finish with 40 his first stick.   He broke off with 16 and 6 his second stick and added a 9 and 2 to finish with 34 for a total of 74.
Winner Paul McLaughlin (L) with runner-up John Roberts
In the final, Paul won the toss and chose to play first.   He played well both sticks, scoring 38 and 46 for a total of 84, the highest score of the night.      In reply, John went for the 18 break but missed, got the black out of position, and finished with 19.

Dave Cooper made the presentations to all of the finalists.   Winner Paul (L) and runner-up John are pictured with their trophies.  Well done Paul and John!

Thanks go to Trevor and everyone at Ye Olde Cottage for hosting the event, and also for the sandwiches which disappeared rather quickly in true Bagatelle fashion.

I'd also like to thank Dave Cooper for organising all the trophies etc and refereeing throughout the competition, and  Ray Lamb who has all helped with refereeing throughout the competition.

The competition will be back in 2013!
